Humming problem

I have a 93 ranger 2.3 and I started to hear a high pitched hum coming from the engine area. When I accelerate or or let off the gas, you can hear it, but when I push in the clutch to change gears it stops. It kind of sounds like a little jet engine. Its not like the whine in the power steering, its more of a loud constant hum. Anyone else have this problem or know what it could be?

I have seen other posts in the past bringing up an IAC (idle air control) unit going bad and making a noise. Take a look in the tech info section (at top of page on this website) under IAC for some general information regarding cleaning it.

I am currentlt experiencing something that sounds identical. I have a "whine" that seems to disappear when I push in the clutch...did you find a solution?

Welcome to FTE, both of you. Since the sound condition changes with the position of the clutch pedal, I would suggest checking out the clutch throwout bearing as well as the IAC.
