Fuel filter problems

New filter problems...installed a new fuel filter and after starting and running for a bit she died and will not start agin. Full tank of fuel and it registers E, she did the same thing last change but after pulling and replacing the filter it started. Any one else experience this with a filter change? What the @#% did u do you do to get it start?

First thing I'd do is put fuel in it, if it registers E. I'm assuming you meant to say F, for full.

Did you put on a new O-ring lubed with oil? Are you using OEM filters? I'd say you have a leak around the cap of the lower filter and are sucking air. Is the upper filter bowl full?

Sounds likely that you did not prime the pump. After a fuel filter change, you need to turn the key on, engine off, for about 30 seconds, and then key off. Repeat 3 to 6 times. This purges all the air out of the system.

All you can do at this point is try the above priming procedure, and then keep cranking until it purges the bubbles. Be sure to give your starter a rest after every 20 seconds, and you may need a battery charger.

Got her running. ‘04 6.0 Diesel, both filters replaced, I think the first stage filter cover at the water separator had to be turned just a c hair more, sound stupid but I think that was it, cheep plastic, always afraid I will break it if I turn it to hard or far, lesson learned. Thanks for the reply bpounds.

I've read on here at one time someone was having the same problem and it was the filter on top of the engine. Said there was an oring stuck on the stem that comes up the center of the filter. Take the top filter out and make sure there isn't one sitting on the stem as this oring should be inside the filter. The oring could've popped out of your old filter. Hope this helps.

Edit: well something to check on next time I guess. Glad u got it running.

Not a good way to get help for your problem. Mine is running fine.

EDIT: glad you got her running. Yes, those caps need to be fully seated.

I guess having the 1/8 to 1/4 turn left was just enough to allow it to pull air or is there a sensor that has to make contact with the lower cap. Thanks for the info dchamberlain. Still can’t figure out why full tank would register E though, not F?

That has to be an unrelated issue. Although working down on the HFCM you could have wiggled the sending unit connection I suppose. But these fuel gauges are notoriously flaky. I would drive it a few cycles and see if it doesn't correct itself. Mine always has so far.

Why would this not be a good way or place to get help or opions for a problem. When in a pinch you seek advise from all avenues and discern from that what is sound. My runs fine when she runs, seems that such a heavy duty truck might want to be able to keep up with some better engineering on parts.

Okay, lets back the truck up

I thought you got a little snippy with either Dave or myself, couldn't tell which, but we were both trying to help. Telling us to "read closer" was, I thought, snippy. You probably didn't mean it that way, so how about we start over? Nice to meet you, Cal.

This is a perfect place to ask for help, and we enjoy trying to help, or else we wouldn't be writing.

That's what mine does once in a while. Glad that it was so simple.

Irish... I forget that the world has become soft. No harm intended to anyone. .

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand
and not close it to tight.
Thanks

Here is a good tutorial on how to change them out.
As you will see you torque the cap to 19 lbs./ ft.
