portable code reader

Can anyone recommend a good portable code reader for my 2001 superduty with a 5.4 engine. I need one that will show pending codes and have the ability to clear them. I think this would be cheaper than what it costs to have a shop check codes and replace parts that I could do myself. The reason I asked is because I recently had a misfire condition that would come and go but worse on wet days. I had read enough on here to be pretty sure that it was a cop going bad but without a code reader I had no idea which one. With what these coils cost I would not replace all eight of them just to fix the bad one. I bought the coil for 51 dollars at napa but it cost me 78 dollars for a shop to check the codes and replace the coil which turned out to be #5 cylinder which is one of the easiest ones to get to. The 78 dollars was just for labor as this shop doesn't charge anything to read the codes.

Several of the chain parts stores will read your codes for free. Autozone, Oreilly's, etc. will often read the code and then look it up and sell you the part you need. If your local NAPA won't do that, maybe consider shopping elsewhere.
