just the starter motor?
Battery connects to starting solenoid
Starter connects to starting solenoid
ignition connects to starting solenoid
solenoid connects to chassis ground
if you apply 12v to the "little" plug on the solenoid it will cause the 'relay' to plunge and your starter to turn
its very basic for the starter if you cant start it and its all connected up the solenoid could be dead
