Best & Worst Engines Ever Made ?!?!

Ouch! Funniest thing I read all day, particularly the bit about the 300 (and they replaced it with what, the 4.2L V-6? What a POS- you think the Triton's got problems....).
In all fairness, the LS's had more than a little piston slap trouble.
Something that works- 4.4" bore spacing is indeed common from the earliest '55 265 to a new LS-7. But, there is one other similarity that will guarantee the popularity of the LS. It has the same bell housing bolt pattern as the old SBC. Hear that, Ford?!? Could you just imagine if all FE's, Windsors, Clevelands, Limas, and Mods could bolt to any Toploader, FMX, C-4, C-6, AOD, AOD-E, E4OD, 4R100......

The LS and SBF are both 4 stroke 90 degree V-8's, and as such they are bound to have some similarities. There are only 2 possible V-8 firing orders with a 90 degree crank, do you mean to say that every engine that uses an 302 HO/351 firing order was based on an SBF?
Ford 302: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
Ford 351/4.6/5.4/302HO: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
Ford 5.0 Modular: 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2
That's 3 different 90 degree V8 firing orders, BTW.

the LS1 head design which begats LS anything is something completely new and while that tall thin port flows well and fast on the street, one that is properly ported is just sick (A number of years back I posted some pics from my work at centroid where Tom Hemphill Racing took a grinder to an LS1 head and made something capable of supporting Nascar requirements) Something that cannot even be attampted on a production head without a recast of the port locations and paths
Ford, sadly chose not to do the same and instead sentenced us to 15 years of spun bearings, oil starved heads cracked heads, audible piston slap and go knows what else the Curse of the Tritons has run down upon us. (heck, they should all die just for getting rid of the 300-6)

You are all NUTs!!!! 10HP Kohler (K241) most awesome of all time. OK that was a little tongue in cheek. But, until Honda came along it was hard to beat. REALLY!!!!!! How could anyone think that the GM 350 Diesel wasn't the worst mass produced engine of all time. Broken Crankshafts!!! Who ever heard of a broken crank in a passenger car? Especially one driven by little old ladies!!!

As for the pre-2011 models...
Well for almost a decade the 5.4L and 4.6L were Fords weak spot in their 1/2 tons. Although I still will argue that the 5.4L towed better than any 5.3L Chevy I ever drove. The 5.3L Chevy may have generally been faster without a trailer hooked up...But the 5.4L handled extra weight alot better. But the Hemi's, Titans, and Tundra's were always quicker than the 5.4L F-150's.
The V-10's...I don't have to much experience with the V-10's honestly...I have driven a few...But I've never towed any weight with one. Back in highschool my friend had a 1999 F-250 Crew Cab 4X4 with a V-10 and his truck was infact pretty gutless, granted that it had over 200,000 hard worked miles on it. It was slow and it sucked gas about 9mpg avarage. But he drove the living hell out of it and it never faulterd. Never had any issues with it...He traded it in on a Cummins Dodge a few years back, and to this day he wish's he had his old V-10 back...His Cummin's Dodge has proven to be a huge expensive headache.
I drove his V-10 on occasion and as I said it was gutless...I don't know if you have ever driven a 2005+ V-10?...But that was the year they went from 2v to 3v design...I did test drive a new 3v V-10 back in 2006 and it was quite a bit more powerful than my buddies old 2v V-10.
I can carry this all the way back the 1990s...
My first pickup that I got for myself in highscool was a 1990 F-150 2WD XLT Lariat with the 302 V8. At the time another of my friends owned a 1993 Silverado with the TBI 350 V8. One day he and I went to the track to see who was quicker down the 1/4 mile and I beat him by a half second with a 4mph higher trap speed...''For the record my old 1990 also outran my friends F-250 with the V-10.

I had an 05 F150 with the 4.6L gutless wonder that wouldnt pull your hat off your head. It had the death rattle on a cold start at like 30,000 miles. That was a pitiful excuse for a V8. I used to have a 68 f100 with the 351W and now i have a 74 f100 with a 302 and they will sqaull tires all day long.

Too many posts to read through but I would hope someone mentioned the Chevy 262 and 267 from the smog era. They are related to the classic 350 and that motor, along with it's 4" bore cousins the 327 and 302 are among some of the best engines out there.
A couple of Fords off the top of my head would be the 300 I6 and the 5.0 Windsor. 1 it's very compact and fits into anything and 2 you can make a bazzilion HP with one provided you address the block. However with a stock block and EFI you can make 350hp out of 302ci and stick it into your daily driver. Pretty good for an old school 2v OHV engine.
Back to GM, their LS motors are killer and definitely in the running for "Best".
