please help vibration problem

Here's the problem I pic up a vibration when i drive between 20 to40 mph vibration starts(not all the time)hit a bump it stops if not I have to slow to 5mph and it goes away go another 1 to 20 miles it does it again seems to have to do with bumps. It does not do it highway speeds ever and it will not do it when hubs are locked (after market warns)in or out of 4 wheel drive Took it to my mechanic he did the flowing Checked all the u joints, took off the hubs and drove it,disconnected the plugs to transfer drove it,marked the drive shaft he said it did move in 2wheel drive. he thinks it might be the transfer case.
Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated I can not afford a new transfer case right now
Oh yea its a 2002 ford f250 crew cab 6'bed stock tires no lift,5.4 liter
thanks Gil

After 3 hours of reading vibration posts I maybe should say shutter not vibration also you really don't feel it in the steering wheel . one more thing the first time it happened I hit the brakes and it stoped now I have to slow down to make it stop. I get out lock the hubs never does it !

Thanks jlmotox My best guess is front end. The sound of the vibration is high pitched like a carrier bearing or similar. New to add just got back from my garage he said with the hubs off if the vibration started and he turned it to 4 wheel drive it stopped. Jl does that still sound like a shock? I will go put new ones on if so!!! Thanks for your replies One more thing My mechanic doesn't often get stumped all the labor was for free. I still will pay anyways but just shows his character

After rereading you post it's probably not your shocks...
With a high pitched noise/vibration I would lean towards wheel bearings or u joints.

How many miles since your last transfer case and front diff fluid changes?

Sounds like you have an honest mechainc though!

wheel bearings can make strange things happen... But I would dig into the wheel bearings if it's not them they probably needed service anyways...

I just find it strange that it only happens between 20-40mph...also if it goes away by switching to 4wd. makes me think something on/in the front axle...

Sounds like it could be u-joints to me, did the mechanic take them off and pull the caps? Usually when the wheeel bearings go bad they leak oil from the seal. The bearings in the u-joints could be dry or rusted they may not necessarily have play in them.

If it goes away when you put in 4WD I would stat looking at those components. If it was me I would take it all apart, check everything out, and put it all back together knowing all is in good operating condition. Your position is slightly different being your having someone else do the work.(Not saying that's bad just maybe cost prohibitive) From that perspective trying to start to rule out say first the transfer case I would drop the front shaft out. I would drive it and see if the vibration starts which it should, put it in 4 wd, the front hubs should still lock, or you can manually lock the hubs, see if the vibration goes away. If it does their is a high probability that the problem is in the front axle. Now this isn't a 100 percent surefit test but it is where I would start. I hope this helps and good luck.
