239 help

hey guys , i just recently scored a 54- 239 for 75 bucks. i bought it for the stock exhaust manifolds and the crossover pipe for my 58 f100. after i got those off i took it completley down to nothin.. 2 pistons were seized. Is it even worth a complete rebuild or not?..... My second question is my 58 with a 292 4 speed plus granny runs fantastic but i'm not comfortable takin it down the highway cause its redlining at 55 mph.. what rear end gear would you guys recommend for highway cruisin plus some overall pep?..

My opinion......... dont waste your money on the 239 build.

As for the redline.......I would do a third member swap and go to a 3.25 gear ratio

But do not think of scrapping the 239! Someone will need it or some parts from it. Seized pistons do not mean it can't be rebuilt. All 8 were seized in my 292 but only one sleeve was required.

I have a 3.70 rear with 225/70-15 tires. 3000 rpm is nearly 60mph.

For the pep check out your dist. thoroughly and if possible have a local run it on a Sun Distrbutor Machine. A lot of the Y dist.s on the road need attention.

Do you have a Holley 2300 carb or Autolite 2100? If it is an Autolite, a change to one with larger venturi's would get you going a little better without too much cost. I'd suggest a 1.08 venturi carb with number 47 jets. Jeep, Y, and SBF owners also are looking so prices for rebuilds on ebay aare up in the range of 150 now.

Yes keep the 239, someone will need it or parts from it, I was just saying if I was going to invest money to a rebuild I would not spend it in a 239

I second, actually third, the motion to not scrap the 239. I'm a good example of some one that might purchase it - I have four in my garage!

A good place to list it is with the 54 Ford Club - 54ford.com There are many 54 sedan owners of 6 cylinder engines that like to drop the 239 in under the hood.

I had a '54 and a better engine to drop in would be the 292 or a Lincoln 360 if you don't mind a little work.
However a little 239 will get up and go with the '54 Mercury Carter 4 barrel on it.
Been there, done that.
