S-Code Manifold

S-Code Manifold

Greetings all! I am fairly new to all this FE stuff --- can anybody help me with the significance of the S-code on my intake manifold? C8AE C Preceded by a large "S" -- What does it mean??

I believe the "S" denotes the part is a "Service" replacement. (It was purchased over the counter at a Ford Dealership-not factory installed) This would be a good question for NumberDummy!

No the "S" is not for service anything. It was the casting code put on the small port manifold that came out on the 390 GT motor in 1966. This manifol became the standard intake for the newer small port heads. The increased air flow velocity help low and mid range throttle response while not hurting the top end.

First things first, WELCOME ABOARD!

What Bear said! You'll also see the same part referred to as the "Thunderbird intake."

FWIW, I have seen both 2V and 4V intakes with the big "S" cast on the runner. If you see one with a "T" cast on the runner, it is basically the same thing. I don't know if it was a replacement for the S, or if it was produced concurrently with the S version.

Thanks for the info

I was curious about the S code as I just aquired a recently rebuilt 390 and C6 to replace the ailing 360 in my 72 f100. The new motor appears to have been put together yesterday and was done professionally. It has the S code manifold and the "H" heads so, depending on the cam installed, it should be a good runner with the new Holley 600 cfm carb. I was going to put on a set of "D" heads and a matching "C" manifold, but, with today's pump gas, it might be more trouble than it is worth.

The "T" code was used on the truck version of the "S" manifold.

LOL If the numbers cast between the center cylinders are C8AE-H, you are good to go!

When you start posting those engineering (not part) numbers, it's a good idea to post the whole set. I think there is another "H" head, but if it's the one I'm thinking of, too spendy for me.

As far as I know, yes. I had one on the original engine in my 1968 F250.

That makes me wonder. Jay Brown reported (I think) slightly better HP from a T intake. I never got that in-depth with his findings.

I'm keeping my 4V T intake just for the TVS hole behind the thermostat. In case I ever get injection...

Black72, 600 CFM is perfect for a street driver.

Thanks again, guys.....

Hypoid - I do have the C8AE - H heads -- it's good to know that they will work. I will always remember to give the complete engineering numbers from now on -- after a few weeks trying to research these numbers, my eyes were crossed, I had a headache, and my nose was bleeding -- other than that, it was fun!

I have found that the American Theorum "Some is good, more is better, and too much is just enough" just doesn't work with carburation!
I chose the 600 cfm carb carefully.

Good choice as over carburation is the worse mistake amateur engine builders make.
