Tranny / Engine / Both Problem?

1999 Expy EB 169,000 miles. Seems to be in basicly good condition. Only have had it for a month.
Unknown history.
When cold the tranny seems to take forever to shift. Not a real solid shift but not bad either.
When warm, taking off in snow, up steep hill it seems to slip until about 1500 rpm before moving.
Tranny just doesn't feel "solid" or right. Somewhere I read something about disconnecting the battery so the tranny can re=program? What's that all about.

Engine seems to run smoothly, but have to admit, wish this had a big block!
Anyways, around 35-40 mph it feels like someone choked the engine. No oomph unless I hit the skinny hard enough to downshift.

Don't know if tranny fluid / filter was ever changed (assume so,,, but).

Starts good, seems to run fine otherwise, fuel I think to be in the 13-15 mpg range but honestly only have put about 500 miles on it so,,,

Are these things that much of a dog or is something dreadfully wrong?
If something is wrong,,, where to start???

Other than being a slug,, I like it a lot. But wished it had enough "go" to get out of it's own way at times. I'm not talking hot rodding here either.

What to do......... (first)

Which engine does the truck have?

Have you checked the trans fluid level?

If you have the 4.6L, revving to 1500 rpm is normal for the torque convertor.

It is also normal for it to feel like a dog since that is too small an engine for a 6000 lb truck.

5.4 engine
Fluid is up... about all I know of it.
Maybe I'm just used to driving peppier things? (in an old man's way - )

Strange thing is, when I step on the skinny it feels like nothing happens,,, but the speedometer climbs fairly decent (?). Not like I could ever pass anything though.
Almost "drives like a school bus" is the best way I can think to put it.

Perhaps I'm expecting too much?

I have owned some seriously fast vehicles in the past. My 5.4 Expy is no racer but the engine does make good torque and moves mine along just fine. I live at 6000 ft of altitude and drove passes over 11,000 feet all weekend to play in the snow. Mine only has the 3.55 gears and I have added bigger tires. Still, I have no problem passing on our two lane roads. Mine gets from 50-70 in plenty of time to make passes.

There could be any number of things wrong with your truck but the description you give doesn't leave us much for clues. Yes, it is big and slow, but it isn't any worse than most SUVs.
