Alternator problem??

I just bought a 2003 Escape approx.2 weeks ago.It ran fine for appox.900 miles until the temp. hit minus27 C. and then the batt. died and it wouldn't start.Since I had a new autell engine scanner/monitor I figured with a new batt. and constant surveilance on the voltage I would be able to see if it was only a worn-out batt. or if I had other issues such as a bad alt. For the 1st. few days with the new batt.the running voltage was between12.4- 12.8 V. I was certain I needed a new alt., however , tonight as I was leaving a heated garage the V's went up to13.6--14.2. Is it possible that I had a glitsh in the scanner or could my regulator be packing it in? I'm not sure what could cause problems 1day and be fine a few hours later. Does anyone have any idea what could cause this as I don't want to change the alt.(a bear of a job on this unit) if I don't need to. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance.

The problem is intermittent, so it's going to be somewhat of a guess. The only thing it could be is the wiring or the alternator. You might have to bite the bullet and get another one and try it.
