96 Explorer Starting Problem

Can anyone help me out I have a 1996 Explorer Sport 4.0 with a Manuel Transmission. It just clicks at the solenoid on the fender. I have replaced two solenoids and we had the starter out and it Bench tested fine at the Parts House. The wires all look good the Battery connections are tight and clean and the Battery checks out fine. What am I missing I am about to pull the starter for the second time. The starter connection wires are clean and tight also. I,m thinking it just might be a tempermental starter. but is there anything I am missing. Thanks in advance. KB

Is the solenoid on the fender clicking rapidly when the key is held to "Start" or just a single click until you release the key?

If it's a rapid click, the problem is likely a voltage/current issue to the solenoid. What does the system voltage do when trying to start the vehicle?

If it's just a single click until you release the key, the problem is likely between the solenoid and the starter. Have you confirmed voltage is getting to the starter? Can you carefully measure voltage to the starter while another person turns the key to "Start?"

Yes, You need to get the VOM out and verify the circuit. Battery+ all the way to the starter, through the solenoids to the main stud entering the starter case. Also check 12vdc @ the exciter lug (small wire on starter, from ignition key start position)

You can also try bypassing the solenoid with a jumper to see if that makes a difference.

Ok it is fixed the problem was the exciter wire I had power to it with the test light but when I hooked it to the starter the spade end was not making contact with the blade on the starter. It looked a little funny so I replaced the spade terminal and walla she starts every time Thanks Guys this one was making me crazy.
