Fuel mixture problem?
1991 Ranger with a 4.0 and a 5 speed. It has been backfiring sometimes from under the hood at start up. Now I noticed that when cruising on the highway and trying to overtake a vehicle it started to miss a little. Just yesterday it died out coming off the highway then left me stranded for about an hour. It started missing real bad at about 45 mph 1700 RPM. I down shifted and it died and costed to the shoulder. after sitting a few minutes it fired up but started missing and eventually died a few seconds later. I let it rest for an hour and it worked fine until today. I had the same problem then realized that if I reved it up to about 300 RPM, it would stay on as long as I didn't let it drop below 2500 RPM. It ran like this for about 5 miles then back to normal purring like a kitten. Any ideas as to what it might be? Thanks
