Cold Start Issues

Hello everyone, I have a 1993 F250 IDI non turbo and am having cold start issues. When I first turn the key the wait to start light only stays on for about 2 seconds, then gos out, it then begins to click which I believe is normal. I have to crank the crap out of my truck to get it to start when cold and it smokes very bad when tring to start. I takes about 5 or 6 cranks for about 5 seconds at a time to get it to fire up. It trys to start several times but dies very quickly. After I get it to start it is fine for the rest of the day and fires on the first crank everytime. Is the issue the glow plugs? The wait to start light never stays on for more than 2 seconds. Any help please and thank you. Jeremy

Someone mentioned in another post that a burned out glow plug could cause that. The controller will confuse the burned out GP as having reached max resistance and shut off the rest of them too soon.

I would say that you have one or more bad glowplugs, that is causing your controler to short cycle. The wait to start light should stay on for 10 seconds on cold start ups. If you have to replace your glowplugs use only Motorcraft Beru plugs. It seems all others don't last. ZD9 is the number you need for your 7.3.

i had same problem with mine last winter so i just replaced glowplugs and controller. there is a few glowplug tests that you can perform, i cant remember exactly how to do it but mine starts perfectly fine ever since then.

Glow plug resistance from the nut to the connector between .5 and 1 ohm.

Glow plug wire removed for the test.
