e4od problems

my 1994 f-150 4x4 with 5.0 engine. My tranny acts like it pops into nuetral and if you don't let off the gas it really bangs. it has about 40000 on a rebuilt tranny. changed filter and fluid and pan was relatively clean. how do you check the mlps and where are the computers located

It sounds like you need a new MLPS to me. It's on the driver's side of the tranny where the linkage connects.

Why do you want to know where the computer is located? Did you mean to ask how to pull the codes?

I don't think there is a good way to test the MLPS. The computer doesn't perform diagnostics on it as far as I know.

Yea I'd tend to agree with Andy on the MLPS but what do you mean "really bangs"?

What bangs, metal on metal banging sounds from under the truck like from the trans or drive line? or from under hood like a engine noise such as back firing down the tail pipes?

You have at least four computers.
1. PCM Computer, drivers kick panel.
2. ABS Computer, right side of dash underneath.
3. PSOM Computer, behind cluster.
4. ICM Computer, drivers side on fender low in engine compartment.

Note all of these are also called Modules.
If you need photos of the locations just ask.

As far as your other problem does the speedometer work OK and is it steady?
Is the ABS light flashing?

You also need to pull the codes before replacing parts.
If you do not know how goto:

I would pull the codes. Go to fordfuelinjection.com and from the list on the right click on OBD1 self test for instructions if you don`t have a code reader.

removed mlps from tranny and tested with ohm meter, all readings within specs. cleaned mlps and wire connection with brake clean and used dielectric grease on connections. cleaned all the ground connections on truck. I've driven about 150 miles so far without a problem( hope I didn't jinx myself lol) hope it solved problem. will update.

Thanks for the great info. I have about 5oo miles on since i cleaned the mlps and connector. It was good knowing how to check the mlps, saved me the cost of buying one and probably the price of a rebuild if I took it to a tranny shop. Thanks again
