Tailgate Question

So i got a blank 1986 tailgate, and the 1987 component kit. I had hoped they would match but not so much. Was wondering why the 1986 components are so expensive, and also is there any cheap way to hook it up besides straps?
Thanks
City boy

Get parts off a compatible truck from a pick a part. Not much else you can do.
On my truck, I installed a complete tailgate off a '89 or so. I had to get all the hardware off the donor truck, and it was all a custom install on my '82. Had to drill new mounting holes, replace every piece of hardware, etc.

You can use 1980-1982 mounting hardware if you get the 1980-1982 specific Tailgate or an aftermarket gate that does 1980-1986. I do not recommend a aftermarket gate though.

The tailgates are different 1980-1982 and 1983-1986. Although they are stamped and look almost identicle, the mounting hardware and holes to mount them to the gate are different. The 1980-1982 gate is also of heavier construction IMO.

1980-1982 uses metal support straps, simular but not the same to the 70's trucks.
1983-1986 uses cables.

I can post the part numbers if needed. Or do a search on this forum, or look in one of the stickies above.
