we had a duralast in our explorer, I don't mind them too much.
their advertisements were kind of wrong though...
first really cold day in the winter, and the darn thing killed itself.
worked perfectly fine the night before, but no. it couldn't take the cold.
my topaz had an interstate battery at one point, but yeah... that's the one that I had, um... accidentally destroyed with a wrench...

Ouch. Last time I had cold start problems in my truck, I was running a Duralast battery that was factory spec for my truck. ~550CA....no surprise, dead of winter it couldn't do it.
lol. At least it had a sturdier carry handle
Oh and I got to drive my truck yesterday, our Jeep was low on antifreeze so my mom and I took the truck to church. After that, we ran up to Walmart in it to get antifreeze, then headed back home and topped off the Jeep.
I do need to adjust the steering wheel though, when I replaced the steering box and hooked the steering column back up, I didn't center it right, so the wheel is turned a bit to the right. It's annoying. lol

Probably an electrical issue, I'm not sure about your carb but mine has an electric choke (or thermal-electric), and because it wasn't hooked up, it didn't work. (Not that I expected it to, lol)
You might look up the wiring schematic for it, and see if you can get it working properly again, or you could just wire it up to a toggle switch, if that'd work.
Me personally, I just loosened the mounting screws, rotated it enough to get the choke plate wide open, then tightened the screws back down. Sure, I have to manually bring it up to 1,200 rpm then let off to idle a couple times to warm it up manually, but it's never caused me any trouble this way. Even in the dead of winter, it'd start right up and warm up rather easily.
When I get a new carb for it someday though, it'll have a manual choke.

sweet
now, will this help in acceleration.
that is kind of the main reason I was asking about this.
my choke never opens, even after letting it idle for 30 minutes, and I feel like it's bogging down real bad when I go to accelerate

Start it as usual. When it's running, bring the engine to around 1200 rpm for a minute, then back off to idle for a minute, then back up to 1200rpm for another minute or so, then back to idle again. Do this for a few minutes, until the engine isn't stumbling when you put it in gear. I've done this in the middle of winter with good results.
