Chugging!!!!!!!!! Please Help!

ok, here's my dilemma, My 97 Ford Expedition XLT will chug arround 70mphs. but recently will chug at various speeds, doesn't really matter, it will chug at 90, 60 etc...... What I mean by chugging is the truck feels like it is losing power or not getting any gas so the truck jerks and the check engine light will flash, when stopped at a red light the truck will idle rough and will feel like the truck will turn off, when giving it gas at take off the truck will also jerk.....

any ideas why this is happening!!!!!!!!

thanks for your help..

Upset ford owner!!!!!

Hmm...have you figured out a way to get the check engine light to stay on? You could have autozone pull the codes for free. If it's tripping up the check engine light, I would look at something like maybe the Mass Airflow Sensor. If it's gone bad, the engine may start flaking out on you. Just a conjecture, though.

Good luck!

Looking at your post again, when it "jerks" while taking off from a stop, does it rev a bit, then "catch" and move? If so, you're probably looking at a tranny failure. It would make sense that if the clutch plates are all worn, then it would lose power as you're driving. However, if it's giving you trouble when just idling, then once again I would look at the mass airflow sensor.

Thanks for the replies, Well the check engine light has been on for awhile and just recently started to blink off and on. the engine doesn't rev up, when on take off and at different speeds does the engine begin to jerk, I can give the engine full throttle and will pick up speed but will cut in and out.......Hmmmmmmm!!!! U mentioned the mass airflow sensor, How would I go about checking this, and what is an average cost to replace?

Thanks,

Chugging!!!!!!!!! Please Help!

Sounds like the MAF to me,same thing happened in my 96 Cougar 4.6. The MAF can be cleaned, but it must be done very carefully. Check out www.tccoa.com and do a search on MAF and also look at tech tips.TCCoA is the Thunderbird Cougar Club of America ,I'm a member and there are many helpful and knowledgable people,as well technical articles,etc.there.
