Need help identifying noise/problem?

Truck is a 2001 F250 v10 4x4 cc lariat. 4.30 rear end auto. 53k miles.
Only mods I know of (bought used) are a banks trans pack and and air force air fiilter.
Going up hills or pulling my #5000 trailer I hear a small rattling noise for a few seconds. Sounds like it is coming from right behind the firewall behind pedals. No power loss, no rpm drop. no side effects at all other than a noise. Want to make sure damage isnt being done.
Previous owner used truck for towing and plowing personal driveway. mechanic cant duplicate noise. mech. thought it might be a loose heat shield and fixed that twice but noise still persists.
Anyone kow what else it could be?
should I be concerned with surface rust on frame? truck was used fur minimal plowing.

u sure it isnt a engine "ping" sound ???

the stock V10 engine tune has a tendency to make the truck ping when loaded going up hills if u dont force the tranny to downshift in time..

Its definetly not engine ping. My F150 had that bad. The best way to describe it is it sounds like driving over the grooves on the side of the road but at a much lower volume and no vibration whats so ever. just a soft noise but thats what it sounds like for a second or two. then goes away. no repeat pattern. just comes and goes.

Bellhousing cover? Combined with the engine separator plate rattling?

Either that, or heat shield.

The V10 is known to make some harmonics at low RPMs under moderate load that rattle both the bellhousing cover and the engine plate. Been there, done that

I agree with Krewat. What RPM range does it happen? I know I can hear my bellhousing cover buzz in the low 2000 range. I need to take it off and either pad it or make a new one but I haven't had the time.
