My truck is an 89 F150 4wd M5OD.
Last night my speedometer quit working. So far I have replaced the following with a known working part. Speedometer cable/gear, and the instrument panel.
I can drive it about 10 miles after going in reverse before it quits working. When it Quits working it just bounces a couple of times and goes down to zero. I can stop drive in reverse for a couple of feet then drive about another 10 miles before it quits working again.
Am I looking for the gear in the transfer case going bad?????
Update.........................................My transfer case is now sitting on my bench, I'm looking at the big yellow gear with 7 teeth. It appears that nothing is wrong with the plastic gear itself. The plastic gear is on a sleeve there is no splines or teeth from keeping this sleeve from spinning on the output shaft. How loose is the sleeve that this gear slides on supposed to be????
