My 21 y/o Son just brought home a 1967 Mustang Coupe. The car hasn't run for 10 to 12 years and has apparently been parked in the San Francisco Bay area and has extensive salt damage. I can handle resurrecting the engine and drive train. Where to start on the body work is the question? The car has cancers in the drip rails, the left hand door, and around the back window. Will also need a right rear quarter panel. Man what a mess! To make matters worse I don't weld anymore, not that I was ever as good as what this needs anyway. Is there a filler out there that can handle large cancers? Some of these cancers are an inch by three inches ( way out of bondo's range ). I know this is a truck site but if someone could direct me to a site that could help I would really appreciate it.
They can help you with about anything you could possibly need answers for. They also have a great classified section. Also, try ebaymotors.com for any parts you might need as well.
One of the best ways to work this is to use Por15. Sandblast the entire area and use Por15 then paint or use undercoat. I've done quite a bit of research on this and the Por15 seems to be the best of bread and is very tough. My truck came from SF too, and I bet it makes your mess look good, I've completely stripped the frame and bed inside and out, I'm sandblasting the underside of the bed now getting it ready for Por15.
Hi, if the car is rusted through then you will have to cut out the rust and weld in new panels. if the front floors are rotted then it probably has bad cowl vents. before you go too far I would pour some water down the cowl and see if it runs inside the car if it does you have to take out the windshield and drill out all the spot welds on the cowl and remove it this involves the front fenders as well. get the replacement cowl vents from mustangs unlimited (or your choice of parts supplier) and weld them in then fix the floors as for the drip rails, it is a real tough job and the only place I know of to get them is from another car!!! If you just put body filler in the holes it will fall out POR 15 is a good product but only stops rust that isn't rotted through. John
Hi, I saw your post over on the mustang site but had already posted here I have two 67 coupes an 89 and a 95 G/T convert.BOSS edition so as you can guess I love my mustangs. John
As far as rust goes it is like cancer so it has toe cut out.
there are several companys who offer patch panels, some fit better than others. Wire feed welders are best to tack theses in with as they don,t over heat the metal. small areas should be sand blasted, you can buy a inexpensive syphion feed that does a fine job using childs play sand. as for as body fille I sugguest
using fiberglass jelly or metal to metal (uses finely ground aluminum) they both use cream harder like "bondo" the plastic bondo type only absorbs moisture and the rot soon starts to
bubble up again . email me with any question at jpollock@rose.net
