Question Hydroboost Mod Help

I'm intrested in doing the hydrboost mod on my 88 250 4X4. My question is What do I get the hydro unit from ? I'm going to try a local bone yard and need to know what to look for. Also can I use my master cylinder or do I need to get a different one, and if I need a new one. What do I get it off of. Next to I need to change anything on my power steering pump pr will the stock pump and resivoir work. Sorry for so many questions, but the more I read the posts about it the more questions I have. I assume the lines needed will depend on the master cylinder? Thanks for the help you guys are great.

You could get a hydroboost from a 77 Lincoln Contintental. There are other cars that had them as options. There are different hoses to hook it up to your power steering pump. I don't know how it's configured but I did a little research on it for my '84 Mustang. I think I got my hydrobooster from a late-60's Lincoln. I haven't looked into bolt patterns and such, though, so you'll need to see if the bolt holes on the 77 Lincoln booster will line up with yours.

There are ways to get a GM unit to work.

But if You get one off a Ford 350-450. You can just buy the plumbing off the shelf.

Mine is off a 96 Super Duty (F450)

Power steering pump pressure out goes to the hydraboost.
Pressure out from the hydraboost goes to the steering gear box.
Return out from the hydraboost goes to the second return line fitting on the power steering pump.
Return from the steering gear stays where it is now.

The pump does not have to change, you can change the plastic reservoir on the pump to the one with two return lines or you could tee the return lines together before the pump and stay with the stock pump.

Hydraboost unit, three hoses.

The F450 hydraboost is a direct bolt on swap.
use your master cylinder, the 450 had disc rear brakes and the rear brake piston in that mastercylinder moves more fluid to the back brakes.

Panic brake application could cause blown rear wheel cylinders with the disc brake master cylinder.

If you get a salvage yard hydraboost, make sure you get the little rod between the hydraboost and the master cylinder.
You can not buy just the rod, don't ask how I know.

I'm the guy with the Chevy (diesel Suburban) booster in my F350, to make it work I needed to offset the booster from the firewall by like 2-1/4" or so (you can use that to tweak your pedal height, I lifted mine 1" from where it is stock) and you need to do a light grind job on the hole on the pushrod where the pin on the pedal goes through. Grade 8 bolts and nuts attach it to the firewall, F450 pressure hoses plumb it in the PS loop, and you need to grind on the master cylinder "ears" and also put a spacer inside it. Overall easy stuff, and it works great!!!

Thanks for the extra options. Dave thanks for the info about the rod. A smart man learns from his mistakes, a wise man learns from the mistakes of others. I'm going to start looking monday.
