Random Clunking

Random Clunking

I've got a 2000 v10, 4x4 excursion. I've been getting random clunking sounds. It sounds like something is hitting the body underneath. Crawled around and jiggled pretty much everything, but couldn't find anything loose. I'm hoping it's not the rear end, but it doesn't do it under acceleration or braking per say, pretty much just random. ????????? I've only got 173k on it, so it's fairly new... HA.

Ball Joints??? At 173,??? -I'm amazed they lasted this long!!!
My 2000 F250 SD went through five sets in 7 years!!!!!

They've all been replaced within the last 20k, along with tie rod ends, drag links, hubs, etc, etc. It's a very random clunking. Doesn't happen on decel or accel. Just kinda random. Oh yeah. New rear driveshaft and u joints too..

Check your front sway bar's connection to the links that come down from inside the wheel wells. I just had to replace my bushings.

Clunking

I expierence the clunking noise also. I took my truck in for a rotation last week and had my local shop take a look and they found it to be sway bar bushings. My truck goes in on Tuesday to the dealer to get it replaced. Hopefully that fixes it because it can sure drive a person insane. Clunk clunk. Dan

Another common problem is the front body-to-frame mounts. They are located under the driver and passenger side carpets. Pull the bolts,, lube them up with sil-glyde or anti seize and re-tighten them. About a 10 minute job, and you might get some results. I got rid of one clunk by doing this. Now I just have to change the front and rear sway bar bushings this spring.

While it could be the sway bar bushings or even the body mounts as was suggested, however, it could be the ball joints again.

I had my ball joints replaced and at right around 20k, just short of a year or so one of them went out again. The shop replaced both sides under the repair warranty. While it is rare, the new parts could go bad. That's why the shop didn't want to mess around and did both sides.

Check out the entire front end to be sure. Don't rule out anything because it was replaced recently.
