I guess the 4-Runner turned into a No-Runner 'till you got there!
I'm sure there are those who know the specifics better than I, but from what I understand this is not a preferred way of doing it. If the 4-Runner was not a "difficult" pull (i.e. not too much undue stress due to heavy incline, etc) then you should be OK after doing it in a pinch. But, it is NOT the preferred way of going about it. That's why I asked everyone how they do it; clevis setup seems to be the best way for yor truck, from everyone's comments here.

haroutd is correct when he said that if it was an easy pull you should be alright. But for heavier pulling, if you wrap around the axle, you can bend the tubes. You also run the risk of crushing or breaking the brake lines and axle breathers that rest on the axle. It is always best to transfer any force to the frame of the truck.
