Intermittent vibration/grinding noise from the front end

First, the hubs must be locked. This locks the rotation of the front wheels to the rotation of the axles.
Second, the transfer case must be in 4H or 4L. This sends engine power to the front axles.
With the front hubs locked, you tie the wheels to the axles but you are still not sending power (via the transfer case) to the front axle.
To lock the front hubs, twist the **** at the center of each wheel to "LOCK" Even the stock automatic (ESOF) 4 wheel drive systems will have this feature, unless you covered up the **** with some wheel centers.
