A guy brought me the distributor out of a motor that I am going to use, but the shaft in it is pretty loose. I don't know much about distributors. Is the shaft supposed to be loose.

The shaft should have a little play up and down but little to no side to side motion. The bushings maybe worn out.

How hard is it to replace those bushings?

Add up parts and labor, and I bet you can pick up a remain for about $50.00 and come out ahead. IMHO

Yep, get a good reman or upgrade. Not worth the time or aggravation.
