CPS Question

I changed my grey cps to a black one that I had laying in my toolbox. Now the truck has "hiccuped" 3 times since I changed it. Kind of just cut out for a second. The SES light has not came on and I don't have any way to scan it. Do you think it could be a bad CPS. Other than that it had been running great.

Its possible. Try checking the plug to make sure its connected securely and that there's no dirt on the contacts.

I put electric grease on the plug when I put it in and I checked the plug after the first time it did it and it was still good. Oh yeah, and I changed the fuel filter today thinking that might be the problem, but it has did it once since then.

Where did you get the black CPS? If it's from the parts store, they have been know to be bad out of the box. Did you put some anti-sieze on the bolt holding the CPS in (might be important later).

If the connector checks out, try sticking the gray CPS back in. If that fixes the problem, you have your answer.

I bought it at a NAPA in the middle of nowhere Alaska for $38. I priced one today at checkers and they want $119 for a black one and $140 for the grey one. The reason I pulled the grey one out is because my truck had a slight miss at idle sometimes. The black one fixed the miss and it runs great now except for the hiccup.

Sounds like it may be on the way out to me. Get a new good one from International, a black one, and be done with it before it strands you somewhere.

That is about the price of the one at checkers. I wonder why the other black one I bought was so cheap. Maybe it was one of the first ones made. No telling how long it had sat on the shelf there. It was a log cabin with NAPA written on the front door and a really old man working there. I think he even lived upstairs.

Diane (and Jody) have a deal on the IH CPS for $65 plus S&H. DP TUNER

I'd avoid the NAPA and Checker versions for the reasons you're seeing now.

Yeah, I think I will give them a holler. Do you think it is safe to drive around with this one. I have my old one in the toolbox, but I don't wanna have to change it on the side of the road.

If the black one is acting up, I'd swap the gray one back in there to drive around and leave the NAPA one as a back up. If it's already sputtering, it may leave you stranded somewhere.

Thanks for the opinion Chris. I think I am gonna let it sit until I get my new CPS. So it gives me a little time to tinker. I am in the middle of pulling my valve covers anyway. I am trying to retorque everything under there.

napa $38, Or International $117 Or DpTuner $65.

What is the difference and how can you tell them apart?

The box they come in is the only way to tell them apart. Many people have reported issues with NAPA & other aftermarket ones either failing early, or right out of the box.

DP-Tuner bought a bunch of CPS from International on sale and is selling them at a good price. I ordered one from DP and it comes in the International box.

I can't tell you why the NAPA ones are no good. I can just pass on the issues others have had with them.
