Well took the new to me truck for its first loaded pull. I'm very impressed with its power and torque. The first voyage was over Rt 33 to West Virginia. And if you've ever been that way it is a 11% grade for 14 miles three big mountains in a row, then you guessed it 9% grade down the other side for almost the same mileage. Saw the pyro go to 1250 for a couple of short bursts, but backed off and kept them around 1050. It has way more power than the 6.2 or 6.5 GM stuff, and I'm a GM tech, so I'm not just blowing smoke!!!(LOL) It got around 12.5 MPG thats not bad I think. My 6.2 Could barely get that buy it self with the wind to its back. OH I forgot to mention I was pulling a 1800 Lbs car trailer over then came back loaded with a 73 Nova. So I would guess around 6000 Lbs. I was very Impressed. I also have a question, I've been wanting to turn the pump up, but I saw the egt's from the trip and wonder should I just leave it be. On the long grades in 2nd and 3rd she blew black smoke pretty good, enough for the 3 minni vans to back off alittle bit, probley thought, What in the hell is wrong with that truck!!
Sounds like leave well enough alone. Your pump sounds like it may already be turned up if you can make it to those temps and black smoke. Can you put a signature on your posts yet as to how your truck is set up? I am also happy with the performace of my N/A truck as set up per my signature!

If you want more power, go for a turbo kit. If she's blowing smoke she's outa air, and theres only 1 option to fix that - turbocharger.
Need to bring that rig over near our part of the word and go up wolf creek pass which its summit is over 12,000 ft high. Located in southern central colorado.

I think I've been over that pass by mistake once in a car. It looked like a shortcut on the map, but it took forever. Has anyone made it in a diesel rig before?

how long ago did you go over it? It goes right into pagosa springs. They widened the road and made it better. They just got done redoing the road and the tunnels which its much nicer than before but its still just as step.
the turbo diesls have no problem with it which includes most diesel pickups and almost all semies. Semis usually don't have that big of an issue going up it (comming down is a different story for them though) Its the gassers and NA Diesels that get slammed on that pass.(engines without turbos) My sidekick with electronic fuel injection will only do 40 max going up that climp while I get passed (its a 2 and 3 lane highway) by a big rigger, and I have a 5.23ish rear end in it and no load!!! My parents will leave me in smoke with their 2001 crew cab 4x4 powerstroker pulling a 35 ft fithwheel with dual slides up that pass while I pull a tiny 16 ft flatbed with a 4wheeler motercycle and generator on it with my 95 k1500 w/350 tbi. I Wanted to take this truck up there this year after installing my turbo but my radiator is pluged and I figured I would overheat going up those mountian passes so I took my chebby again. Theres always next year.
I was in a 79 impalla wagon with a 305 with more than 200k on it. Near the top, I was in first gear going maybe 20. I thought I'd blown something until I saw the altitude at the top. Going down was much easier.
When I had my pump rebuilt this winter, I had it turned up.
After a few trips over the Mt. pass with my white boat... it wasn't white anymore. It was almost embarasing. It looked more like a locamotive than a pickup.
So I had it turned down and didn't loose that much power. Its just a little less "snappy."
In conclusion, I wouldn't turn it up. Give it more air!
