I have an 06 Ford Super Duty. Both rear doors on are getting replaced by the dealer. Its not ever out of warrenty. Would running boards help that problem.

 

My "01 is the same way. I actually sanded all the bad areas, painted with rust converter paint(turns it black and hard). primed painted clear coated. It lasted exactly 1 year and is back to how it was before and the rust continues......

 

You can't stop it. My 99 drivers door has chunks of rusty metal that fall when you slam the door.

 

This is one of the main reasons I believe in having a vehicle professionally rust proofed. I live in the rust belt and I've had 15-20 yr old vehicles with solid bodies after being Ziebarted. Others that weren't rusted through in a few years. I'm also trying Rust Bullet on a spot where the paint was damaged right down to the sheetmetal to see if that stops any rust from developing.

 

Truth! If I ever buy a vehicle new, the first thing I am going to do is go to Ziebarts. My 250 is getting so bad with the snow plowing, I am going to have to pull the bed this coming Spring and sandblast, prime, and undercoat it. My doors are also starting to get bad. If you live in areas with bad winters, undercoat, undercoat, undercoat!

 

I have 2 super duty's, a 2004 and a 2007. My 2004 has running boards with a solid back that go right up to the bottom of the cab. My 2007 has chrome tube steps. My 2004 was always clean under the door seals and rust free. The 07 was always full of crap and was starting to rust. I installed the solid running boards and have had no further problems. There is just too much road salt and mud that can get packed in there.

 

If the rust isn't too bad, I prefer to sandblast the rust and pitts out of the metal and prime with a good epoxy etching primer. Then a little scratch fill primer, and paint. I have found epoxy based primer and paint to be more effective at stopping rust than undercoating. But you do need to wash the corrosives off at least weekly for the metal to hold up. I have also found that parking in a garage speeds up the effect of salt because the temperature gets warm enough to make the salt work better.

I put one on my 2001 F350 2WD when I bought it in 2004. The under side of the floorboard still has Gray paint over most of it. I am a true believer in it's ability to keep rust to minimum. I live in Michigan and we know how to use salt, lay it down baby.

 

How much did that run you?

 

jesus, anything this new shouldnt have rust! i'm so glad we dont use salt here. hell my '91 f-250 doesnt have a lick of rust on it lol i could not imagine if somthing so new was rusting out. but then again theres a lady at work that has a '96 blazer that is falling apart from rust..its from MN..crazy!

 

All these methods listed will slow dow the rust but not stop it. The ONLY way to get rid of the rust is either cut it out or sandblast. I did both on my 2000. Cut the lower door skin off, then sand blasted the door shell, weld true prime on both the new skin and door shell ,then welded a new lower skin on. It has been 5 years and not a spot of rust. The problem is, ford does not paint between the shell and the skin before assembly. The rust starts as soon as the door gets wet the first time. You are basickly screwed. And salt just speeds the process.

 

If I remember correctly it was around $225.00 but it's been 5 years so who knows. They have different sizes for size of your vehicle. I kinda wish I went the next size up just because. But from what I hear from other people rust problems and my sons 2001 F350 which doesn't have it, I either got a hell of a well painted truck or it works.

 

Some old guy told me he mixed grease with parafin wax,warmed it up and used that. Never have tried it. Has anyone heard of this? Has anyone else tried the grease with parafin? Does it work?

 

About how much does ziebart cost for undercoating? I'm really more interested in the prevention side of things since I just bought an 09 and it does not have any undercoating. My 99 with the factory undercoating is already rusted pretty bad, cab corners have about 3" wide hole in it now, along bottom or door, tailgate, etc. And I plan on keeping the 09 a whole lot more than the 10 years I have the 99.

I hear about spraying oil in the doors, underbody, etc, but I dont want to do that yet since I might undercoat it and I dont want a big mess on it already that would hinder the undercoating.

 

guys im a firm believe in this product called eureka fluid film! dan, the owner was on here offerering free samples. just got done undercoating my truck and plow with it. spray it at 90psi and your good for a year. check it out..BTW this thread is really old!
