Question Trans Help

Hello everyone! I'm new to the site and need some assistance on my truck. I just bought a 01 F-150 and seem to already be having some difficulties. When I put my transmission into reverse, the engine will rev up to around 1500-2000 RPM before the trans clunks into gear. Reverse is the only gear that does it really bad...the rest don't take as long to clunk but they still do. Also, when I go to take off from a stop sign, I get a little sloppy hesitation before I actually get moving. I'm NO expert on automatic transmissions and figured I'd see if anyone could help! Thank you!

Matt

Sounds like torque converter problems, better take it to a shop for a expert opinion.

Welcome to FTE ford01_MAN!

This may sound like a silly question but, have you checked the fluid level and checked it color and smell? Good luck!

Ford dealership transmission guy here. Not a trans expert, I just fell into it by default, but it's what I do so....

First thing you always do is check fluid level and condition. If it's burned, DO NOT automatically flush it. You might flush what is left of the friction material that is suspended in the fluid right out of the trans. Now, what trans is in it, 4R70W or 4R100? The easiest way to tell the difference is the 4R70W

has more of a square pan with a flat bottom and one hump sticking out of the bottom. The 4R100 is longer and more rectangular. I rarely see the 4R100 in a half-ton though. Assuming you have 4R70W, Try driving the truck in manual 1st and see if you have engine braking when you let off the gas. If so, you might have a reverse clutch fault, if not, it is probably the reverse band. The shift solenoids do not chnage state from park reverse, neutral or 1st gear, so I doubt those could be the problem. Reverse runs a higher line pressure in reverse, so it could be a pressure control solenoid. It might also be a sticking valve in the valve body. In order to accurately diagnose the problem, it would probably have to go to a shop who could do line pressure tests and have a good scan tool. Anyways, a rough guess would be that the trans will have to come apart, but that's not for sure. If you have any more questions let me know, I'll try to answer them as best I can.

OK, guys, I had the transmission pressure tested and the readings they got were odd, especially in reverse. Yes, I do have the 4R70W transmission to clarify from earlier. I found a TSB on ALLDATA for my year that has to do with the reverse clutches being worn out due to the sudden shift from reverse to drive without coming to a complete stop. Is it likely that on a truck with 112,000 miles for the clutches to wear out, or is it premature failure from changing gears so quickly?
