sled puller

i am going to build a pro stock sled puller out of an 80s model ford i was just wondering wat would be a good combination for this? Would a 6.9 like Dave S. be good for this or would a cummins work better i am going to keep a ford no matter what motor i put in it. . Im sure an automatic tranny would be better than a 5 speed. i was just wondering wat some good options are. Thanks Justin

Getting a 6.9 to keep up with the cummins, strokers and duramaxes on sled pulling would be very impressive but I don't know if its do able. I would go with the cummins conversion. Lots more upgrades for the cummins as well. Sure would like to see some numbers off daves engine from a dyno or pull. I would even pitch in on part of the cost of the dyno just to know what its capable off. We all know it has alot, but how much compared to the competition. Good luck

I dont know what your rules are in Missouri, but in IN if you want to pull in any class that even resembles stock, you need an ford engine if you are building a ford truck. And unless you plan to dump tons of money into it, you wont be able to keep up. Around here we have several 12v cummins that are pushing 800hp. And these are the guys pulling in the street stock and pro stock classes

We have the Indiana truck pullers association, I am sure MO has something similar.

But you probably want an older 12v cummins. These are easier and cheaper to work on than the newer 24v. And they will make more power to an extent. I think they made the 12v until 98 or early 99. And as far as transmissions go, your c6 should work nicely. But those older Dodge trannys are junk and you will definatly want a manual or an aftermarket transmission. A lot of the guys around here use Suncoast.

the 24v are electronic, all the 12v are mechanical. The one that many are making insane power from is the ones with the inline injector pump, made after the 94 model year.

Show-Me Smokers.com - Index

Heres a diesel truck pulling group in MO.It shows their rules. Its mostly all Dodges.

Video - Fort Scott Kansas

The above video is of a guy that I work with.He pulls a Dodge in the 2.6 turbo class. He made two full pulls at Ft Scott,KS last Friday evening easily beating a Ford PS owned by a friends brother..The Dodge makes about 550 RWHP.

I go to lots of pulls and have never seen an IDI pull even in a street stock class..You just cant get the horses needed. There really arent all that many Duramax's or Power Strokes pulling. Its just too easy to get power out of a Cummins.

There is a screaming Duramax out of the Lone Jack,MO area that sometimes puts the hurt on the Dodges. He won our local pull by 30 ft.Theres a video below showing it pulling the Open class at Urich,MO.The guy I work work with (Dan B) got 3rd place.

I did see a 6.9L pull at the local pull last weekend. I think he got around 200 feet. Most of the other trucks were running 280-320. He did beat a Chevy 6.5L though...

ya i think if i built my 6.9 like Dave S or close to it i would not do to bad i would just pull it for the heck of it. but i want to build one to win. i have also been thinking about putting a cummins in my f250 with the 6.9 but there aint many old diesels left so i think im goin to turbo er and fully redo the truck. would it be better to have a dual or single rear wheel. What size tires? and to pull i would not want an engine with all kinds of electronics on it. whats a good tranny for a cummins swap

Get a Cummins out of a '94-early '98 Dodge.
It'll have the Bosch P7100 Injection pump, the only way to go unless your rich and want to run two of the later pumps on a 24V. Bottom line: '94-'98 simpler and cheaper.

As for trannies you could use a later model tranny with a few thousand dollars thrown into it. They are every bit as good as the Ford autos--- E40D through the 100s and actually better in my opinion.
There was also a Cummins specific 727 Chrysler that would AT LEAST equal a C-6, most people say beat it, especially the Cummins-specific one as the internals are all the best offered by the factory and the torque converter is WAY better/more expensive than the gassers had. But.. as far as I know I've never seen one at a sled pull.
I don't know much about the REAL (not GM) Allison trannys as far as how they would perform at sled pulls but they are WAY STRONGER than anything offered in a pick-up. They may shift too slow, be too heavy, have too much reciprocating mass or something as you never see them in sled pulls and it seems too obvious a choice to me. They are really strong and durable.

Maybe a way around the rules would be to rebadge your truck as an F-450 or 550 or just SuperDuty as at some point you could get the Cummins in the "over 1-ton" Fords. I don't know exactly when but I think it was with the '99 redesighn. It wouldn't be totally kosher but it might work.

I am sure they make an adapter plate somewhere. But a manual may be the way to go if you are going for the pro-stock class. Most places won't let you pull with stuff that isn't offered in a 1 ton or lower truck. Therefore stuff like a f450 wouldn't be allowed.
