Intermittent starting problem

Hello all,

After fixing one starting problem (fuel pump) another one cropped up...

Intermittently, I turn the ignition key to start and can audibly hear the starter relay solenoid in the engine compartment on the fender next to battery engaging (clunking noise) but no starter engagement--turn key back to off, then turn back to start and it starts fine. Sometimes the no start condition happens twice. My hunch is the starter is "sticking" and not popping out the gear to engage the flywheel. I replaced the starter 3 years ago--is it already time for a new starter?

Thanks,

Dennis

If you've never replaced the battery cables, i'd start there. It sounds like a ground issue, but replacing ALL lengths of battery cables, both (-) and (+), is cheap and easy.

Also, while you have the starter dropped to change the (+) cable, have it tested somewhere for free.

There is a wire that runs from your starter relay down to the solenoid on the starter.

It attaches with a spade connector. That spade connector is the most common source of the intermittant start problem.
