Fuel Pump Replacement

I just pulled the fuel pump assembly out of my front fuel tank as I'm replacing the ones I have. The fuel pump is inside this plastic assembly that has the fuel float sending unit attached to it. I have tried taking the darn thing apart to get at the fuel pump but the plastic tabs are not cooperating, all I'm doing at the moment is chipping away at the plastic. Eventually I'll get it off, but I'm afraid I'm going to just end up shaving down the plastic tabs so it won't fit back together. Is there some trick that I'm missing on this fine plastic assembly Ford put together. I hate to end up messing it up and then find out Ford either doesn't sell new ones any more or it's going to cost me $75 to get a couple pieces of plastic.

Any thoughts on this one?

Thanks,

Scott

There is a screw under the metal tubes at the top that may be partially hidden by the metal plate between the two main tubes, so you want to remove these tubes first. Getting the lid off the plastic resovoir is an excersize in patience for sure, you need multiple flat screwdrivers and such to pry back the tabs so you don't cause too much damage.

That sounds like the trick I was looking for. I removed the float assembly but I missed the screw at the top. I'll go out and give it a try. Nice pic, looks exactly what I'm working with. I knew someone would have a bit of info on this. Just got to love having this resource.

Thanks,

Scott

Well, I got the darn thing apart once I pulled out the tubes on the top first. Wasn't sure I could do that is they were fairly snug. Once I got it all apart I found that the Walbro GSS242 fuel pump I purchased a couple years ago as their replacement don't seem to fit properly. The different electrical connection at the top is getting in the way. Doh!
