Hey I think you can put them up to 6 feet on the front, most underpasses or height restrictions are about 9 feet so you dont want them to rip the signs down...
I have 5 foot fibreglass whips on my truck and even they are a bit tall for driving around the city. I couldn't imagine driving with any taller unless you don't care what they run into. Driving through fast food and ATM drive throughs usually results in them just touching the roof and bending slightly. just thought I'd share my experience.
you can get 8ft steel whip antennas, if there legal to use in your neck of the woods. i had one on my truck and yes it hit the roof at the drive through.
