Shift Indicator

Shift Indicator

Hi - Just bought a 1977 Explorer - needs alot of work and I am new to the rebuilding old truck scene.

The truck is an automatic 302 with a C4 transmission. On the steering column - when I put it in drive the shift indicator shows slightly right of drive - slightly right of reverse etc. In other words the red arrow is not lining up with the letters.

How do I fix this?

Welcome to the site! Under the truck on the driver's side of the transmission, the trans. shifter rod is connected to the column shifting linkage via a slotted bracket and a lock nut. You can loosen this and adjust how the shift lever is positioned relative to the gear that the transmission is in. Just spend some time playing with it and you'll be able to figure out which direction does what. If you have a buddy in the cab telling you what the needle on the gear indicator looks like while you're underneath the truck adjusting it, that's even easier. Just make sure that you put the parking brake on and that you chock the wheels really well since you'll be under the truck and taking it out of gear.

Thanks fmc400 - I knew this site was going to be awesome for me. I hope you or all can help me with another thing. My choke does not work the greatest - kind of makes me have to keep my foot on the gas until it starts to idle better. Is there an electric choke that I can replace this with? Would I have to replace the entire carb?

BTW FF, that is an awesome combination. The 302 and a C4 make a great truck. I used to build C4's for asphalt and dirt track racing. Very low centrifugal weight. Give your engine some "help" with an intake, cam and a little head work, dual exhaust and with the light weight of the engine/trans combo ....

Thanks rjent - the guy who had the truck before me made the truck dual exhaust. I will start diving in.

FF,

The choke cap is replaceable. There are hot-air chokes, fully electric chokes, and combination chokes. They are pretty much all the same fit, just different activation mechanisms. You can take the numbers off the rebuild tag on your carb to a place like Napa and they can cross reference the correct choke cap for you. If the tag is gone, they still should be able to find it based on your make\model\engine info.
