Pulling Heads

Ok, I busted an exhaust manifold bolt & I can't get the bleepin' thing out. Vice grips not working at all. Bought some stud removers, but that's not working either except to remove the threads. Drill won't fit.

It's a 302. Anything I need to know before removing the heads? Things to do, or not to do, aside from replace valve cover and head gaskets, and get new head bolts.

Thanks in advance.

New intake gaskets. You don't need new head bolts as far as I know. They aren't torque to yield like new type bolts. Just torque properly. Before going through all that have you tried spraying with pb blaster or equivalent (not WD-40) to penetrate?

You may want to consider taking it to a welding shop. A good welder with a special rod can weld to the end of the broken stud and build it up till it get out past the manifold , then you can get a good grip on it. Plus with it hot it mostly spins right out. The new weldind rods they have prevent the rod from sticking to the head or manifold and this keeps them from damaging threads. If you can get at it it's worth a try, could save alot of work.

Drain the block! There's a wee screw-in plug on the passenger side front of the engine.
