timing
I'll get this EFI down one of these days. I know a handheld tach positive lead hooks to the small wire terminal on the coil headed for the distributer. Where do you hook up with all this wiring and plug in connectors? Instead of pulling vacuum hose from distributer, what wire connection do I pull to set timing? Chilton doesn't say anything about timing that I can find. I guess they don't want you messing with the distrubuter. Without pulling anything for advance it is setting at 10* at idle. I went ahead and advanced 2-3* figuring everything would be affected by the same amount. When out to 5* I start to get detonation.
Sorry for such elementary questions, but I only know carburetors.

You will need to disconnect the spout connector. it is just a little plug that probably has a grey coloured terminator plug on the end, disconnect the plug. It's a two pin connector that If I remember correctly should be right near the distributor, if not there it will be on the driverside fender. Once this is disconnected you can check and adjust the base timing.

Give us the year and engine size and we can a little more accurate on the location, specs etc. You disconnect what's known as the spout connector, which is a small plug that you pull from the end of the connector which disables the computer from adjusting the timing on it's own while you're trying to set it. Pull the spout, set initial timing to specs, reinstall the spout.

It's the '92 351 in my signature. Can anyone tell me where to hook up my handheld tach?

The SPOUT connector will be near the driver side hood hinge. You can hook up the handheld tach the same way you would on a carbureted engine since the coil works exactly the same. The coil does look different, but it still has a 12V supply and the negative signal wires. The coil is mounted most likely on a bracket just above the driver side valve cover.

Thanks. That helps a lot. It must be somewhere around the Check engine test plug. I just have to figure how to hook the tach lead to the durn plug on the lower part of the coil. I may need to customize the wire.
