Both 78's I had worked great. Never had a problem with the stock units. I don't know what model they were though. I was running 33's on my last 78 f-150 and I never heard so much as a groad from the power steering system.

this one makes all sorts of noises. groans mostly. it also leaks like a seive. usually the month starts out with left turns getting hard, but right is just fine. then i find a puddle. and right doesn't like me either. and the pump yells at me the whole time. even if it is full.

Sounds like it's time for a new pump. Call your local parts house and find out if it's cheaper to rebuild or buy new. The benefit to a new one is they usually come with some type of warranty. I have learned that the more warranty you buy, the less you'll have to use it. :-)

Put a Saginaw powersteering pump in. Not sure what came in the 78/79. But if it is anything like the junk they put in the later models, do yourself a favor, research about replacing it with a Saginaw. Saginaw is a brand that came in the Econoline vans. You can find them ina bone yard for about $15-$20. Get the bracket, new high pressure hose and wahla! The ability to turn humongo tires without even so much as a squeel!
