Hello fellow ford drivers
I just bought a 1993 f150 w/300-6, 5 speed. My question is: there is a tube from the cat that runs up to the top of the motor somewhere this tube is broken. will this effect anything? Also I found a 1 inch hose plugged on the top of the engine that I don't know where it goes. The truck gets poor fuel milage. I was wondering if this could cuase it. Any tips would help.
i just jove the 300-6 that is why I bought it.

These motors use an air injection system to helps the cat burn off excess hydrocarbons at cold starts, but it mostly just dumps the air to atmosphere at operating temperature. The system includes a pair of diverter valves and air pump with associated plumbing. It injects air into the heads as well as directly into the cat depending upon some predetermined conditions, and is operated by a couple computer controlled vacuum solenoids.
If the tube connected to the cat is broken then you have a hole in the exhaust, and this will affect performance and milage. This system must stay intact and operating or it must be completely removed and sealed.

So if I remove the entire system does that include the solenoids? Also there is a pipe that runs out of each cylinder on top of the head that is rusted out - I guess plug those of as well. Will this affect overall ignition timing?

If you remove/plug all the vacuum lines associated with the system but leave the solenoids connected electrically it will be OK and won't throw codes. All holes in the heads and exhaust must be plugged.. especially those upstream of the O2 sensor. This system was primarally used to reduce emissions, removing it won't affect ignition timing or fuel consumption. With the rusted out pipes on it now it is drawing air into the exhaust and making the computer think the A/F ratio is lean, so it's adding extra fuel.
