I just looked up "E Clampus Vitus" on Wiki. Tongue in cheek fraternal organization (?) that just won't go away. Members called "clampers," wear Levis, red miner's shirt and black hat.
Is that correct? Are there any active chapters in the area? Or members?
E Clampus Vitus is a fraternal organization, started back in the 1850's or 60's, and they are now a kind of historical preservation society - you will see bronze plaques at historical sights around the west, particularly but not exclusively, in the old mining towns, like Bodie. (#64) Placermike will tell you about it when he comes back in, I don't know a whole lot about them other than the members are called redshirts or clampers. There are chapters all over the west.
i'm not a clamper (that i know of) but i do know that Bodie is the coolest ghost town there is...if you're ever near Yosemite, go to Bodie...it's worth the ride..if you can catch Bodie Day, you really scored..
