Is it possible to remove the passenger side front u joint without pulling the axle off? The vehicle is a 1984 F-150 4X4 with a 351W.

 

If you are referring to the axle joint, then no. The tire, lockout, caliper, rotor, and hub have to be removed and then the whole axle will slide right out for you. Difficult? No. Time consuming? You betcha. A little patience will go a long way for you on this one. Sorry for the bad news.

 

cfdrives3 is correct, you have to take it all apart.

That axle is held in with three bolts holding on a retaining plate. I had a hard time getting mine out, so I somehow wrapped one end of a chain around it with the other end wrapped around the, um, I call it a knuckle, the spindle attaches to it (and the wheel & tire go on top of that). I then turned the steering wheel which turned the knuckle thinger which pulled the axle out for me. ;-)

He will have to pull all the stuff at the wheel, but he should be able to leave the retainer plate and axle coming out of the pumpkin. He would only need the outer axle assembly which should slide apart on the passenger side slip yoke. If you have a boot, make sure to disconnect it.

 

Good catch Dave, it's been awhile since I did one. I just remembered that after all was removed to get to it, it slid out.

 

I guess that could be true, I really don't remember many of the details since it's been almost a year since I did it. And, I replaced all three of 'em at the same time, so I guess I was thinking the first poster was gonna be doing the same. Sorry if I confused anybody.

What I should have said was- The tire, caliper, hub/lockout, rotor, bearings, and spindle. Then you could slide it out. It just occurred to me that I might have caused some confusion.

 

Ok, thanks guys. Well I figured that I would probably have to remove all of that, but I didn't want to remove it all and spend all that time then have someone tell me that I didn't have to remove it all.
