e40d hard shift

I've looked on several transmission threads but haven't found my particular problem. I have a 91 F150 with 300 Six , e40d, that I bought just two months ago. The truck has 125,000 miles and runs great. My transmission shifts smooth as silk for the first 5 minutes of driving. Then, after it warms up it shifts harder and harder. It bumps really hard and shakes the whole truck. Also, if I give it more gas than normal on take off, it will shifts weird from 1st to second. the rpms will come down when it goes into second, then a few seconds later i get the big bang of the actual shift. The 3rd to 4th shift is quick but very hard after the engine is warm. I'm just wondering why everythings act up while the engine is warm and why it is so smooth when it's cold. I haven't changed the fluid yet......would that make a huge difference? The fluid level is good and in good condition. Thanks for any help!

Does your OD OFF light blink when this happens?

No I don't get any blinking from the od light. I should say that it's more of a vibration that shakes the truck than a hard shift. It really only does it if I pull out into traffic and get on it a little. Normal non-agressive driving it shifts good.

Sounds a little like torque converter shudder. It can get bad. Try changing the fluid.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I finally found some threads that kinda had the same problems. I just wonder why it does it when the motor and tranny get warmed up and not when it's cold.

Oil temperature may change the friction modifiers a little.

If you haven't changed the fluid it can look as red as new but it doesn't mean a
thing. Take a paper towel and lay it out, pull out the dip stick and let the fluid drip
onto the paper towel, clean the DS and put it into a fresh bottle of fluid and let the
same amount of fluid drop onto a clean spot of the paper towel, You should notice
right away that the fresh fluid is spreading out into a big circle while the old fluid
just sits there in roughly the same spot and looks visibly darker. After you swap the
fluid if you do this every oil change you can gauge the condition of your fluid and will
have a better idea of when to change it.

Well I finally changed the fluid. It shifts alot better. 2nd gear still changes funny but the truck doesn't vibrate when shifting. Thanks for the advice. PO
