cranking problem

cranking problem

why does starter soleniod on LT fender wall over heat during cranking attempts ????? nothing is lose, exposed or bare.

It is passing 100+ amps thru it. The longer you run it, the hotter it can become. Clean the ground where it mounts, make sure the wires going to it and away from it have clean connections, and that the wires are in good shape.

Never mind a visual check.

Inspect, clean, secure all cable connections including grounds.

If there is corrosion between the cables and connection there is more resistance and that causes more heat in the cables.

if you have 30 year old 4 gauge wire, that will heat things up too.

I prefer 2/0 (double aught) when its time to replace them.

its real easy to be pulling 250 to 350 amps thru the starter circuit
any cranking of more than a few seconds will cause it to get hot

Also keep in mind if the starter itself is starting to go south? That will cause it to draw far more current then it should. If you have an advance auto or some such parts store with a battery/alternator/starter checking device (good ol' VAT40 would be outstanding for this) They could tell you exactly how much the starter circuit is pulling.
