Marble question
Frederic suggested i post this here so here goes
Ive been restoring an old house that was built around 1890-1910. they have these marble mantles and fire place stoves in the houses and when you strip off the paint the marble is real dull and dingy and has rust and dark stains in them.. what can i use to try and clean this out? right now most of them have like ten coats of leaded. oil and latex paint on em?
should i use a heat gun or stripper on them?

One of the problems with marble is that it stains easily. Try searching on "marble stains", and you will probably find some homemade and commercial stain removers. Depending on the condition of the marble, you might be stuck with someone else's poor decision to paint the mantle.

You'll need a poultice to draw out stains.
Oxalic acid will remove iron stains, but I don't know what it will do to the marble if left on too long.

But I think a Methelene Chloride Stripper and a nylon brush will be your best bet for removing 10 layers of paint without scratching the marble.
Rinse with TSP to remove traces of stripper.
Can you get this stuff in your state Ranger Bob?
