Does it run ok now? The EFI 300s were the highest stock power of the bunch.

You will probably not realize any usable power increase from headers alone. After you take off the mufflers and cats, it will sound faster and you will be convinced you've found the secret to it all.

I know fooling with the truck is a fun thing, but what else is going on? Saving money for school? Got something lined up post high-school?

What else is going on with the truck? Tires? Brakes? Clutch?

An upgrade to a 5 speed with OD would pay more than the headers, for example.

With an EFI engine, you run the risk of fooling the engine computer into doing something wrong when you make mods. Headers with the proper oxygen sensor bungs wouldn't hurt, if everything gets hooked up right.

Not sure if your engine has sensors just before the cats or before and after. If both, and you pull the cat, the engine computer will be all confused.

So my advise is to survey the truck and make sure it is sound and safe to drive. Address any issues related to that. (you got a good set of snow tires? nothing takes the shine off a new to you truck like crashing in the snow...)

And then focus on YOUR future.

Leave the motor alone. Ford got it right the first time. If you want a hotrod, go V8. Although I say this with building on my 300 in the distant future in the back of my mind. :P

Trust me, unless you have the smarts and the money to dump a lot of both into your truck you will only regret messing around with "perfection". One thing always leads to another. A EFI 300 may only have 145 to 150 HP, but it hits it kind of low. Low compared to other motors. 3,400 RPM is much better than 5,500 RPM to make the same amount.

Just do what I do. Make sure it runs good, make it look good, keep her clean. I get comments everywhere I go with mine. Going true duals would make it sound good though. But do you have that kind of money? I went the *cheap* way and it still cost enough. It does sound good though. Just cut off your muffler and you'll be fine. ha.

Basically leave well enough alone. Nothing wrong with a stock 300. Heck, if you do it right you can even get good gas mileage out of them.

I have headers on my EFI 300 as does SilverStreak, both of us say they are worth it. that said i know we have been around these darn things for a long time.

BUT, being ur only 16 and need a dependible driver i would leave it alone. put a different muffler on it with some tail pipes for sound and be happy. i was 16 once and beat the hell out of it wheelin and regret it after replacing the trans, having the body rot from having mud packed in the bed supports and causing a lot of un-needed expense.
