Knock Sensor

My Chiltons and Haynes books says that the knock sensor is used on some 4.9 inline 6 engines. Does this mean that my 95 SFI 302 with mass air doesn't have one?

The earlier 302's used a knock sensor, but I'm not sure about the SFI versions. If there is one, it will be all the way at the back of the engine, threaded into the block just behind the intake manifold, offset to the passenger side. I have a picture of the location in my gallery, I think in the wiring group.

Thanks for the picture. I'll look and see if I can see the knock sensor on mine. This is off topic, but did you notice any gain in prerformance of fuel mileage by adding the MSD box? I have been thinking about adding one to mine.

Nothing really noticeable except maybe a smoother idle. The coil and normal tuneup parts brought fuel mileage up from about 12-13 to around 15-16 back soon after I bought the truck, then adding the box on top of that produced little, if any, further improvement. I bought the MSD box second hand for about 40 bucks, so I figured for that much it would be worth a try. I'm glad I didn't spend 200 or however much a new one costs.

Your 95 SFI should have one. Sometimes it's easier to see if you crawl underneath with a flashlight and look up above the bellhousing.

I was able to see what I think is it from up top on the driver side. It looks like my truck has one, or at least something in the same location. There doesn't appear to be a connector on top of it. Instead, it appears that there is a hose coming out of the top of it. I don't see how that could be the same thing then. I will have to inspect further and look from underneath.

That is probably the air injection check valve. The knock sensor is just in front of that offset to the passenger side and will have a two wire connector.
