What do you guys get for deer out there? Mostly white tail around here. I've hunted mule deer in Wyoming, but it's gotten too expensive to get an out of state permit. I use a .270 ruger.

WOW guys great pics and info. Number is there anything you dont know about? You are one smart guy!

Id love to kill a moose or elk or whatever but I guess that means Id have to put down my .243.

At this point Im going to either buy a new non-youth model stock or buy a new gun. Honnestly Id like to buy a new gun off the shelf. Old guns are very nice but I want something new.

Any of you guys know where I can find out when a browning A-5 was made. I have both my granddads and great granddads A-5s. I had my g. g-dads A-5 completely restored 6-8 months ago because it was in a fire in 96 and eventually I want my g-dads done. My g. gdads gun was a light 12 gold trigger that came with a 26" mod barrel and a 28" full. If I post the serial numbers can you guys tell me approximately when it was made? My best guess is the late 50s early 60s.

I guess for open country a .270, .308 or 30-06 would be my choice for deer. Where we live 150 yards is a long shot as most are under 40 yards. A 30-30 with iron sights is all that's needed here and probably has taken more deer than most other calibers combined.

3 choices

1) .270 Winchester with BSA Scope
2) 12gauge Remington
3) F350 Dually

Whichever brings home the meat

I hear ya.

I dog hunt mostly with a Browning silver hunter. Up until recently I HATED Brownings with a passion and would only shoot Remingtons. Last season my 11-87 damn near blew up on me which is why I went to a Browning. One of the 2 forks that hold the shells into the magazine broke causing the 3rd shell to jamb sideways in magazine once the 2nd shell was fired. It made a mess of my reciever!

My 79 F150 killed more deer in 2004 than I did so I know what youre talking about.

Im seriously thinking about just buying a leupold scope for my .243 and getting over being hunched into the gun. Its honestly one of the most accurate guns Ive ever shot and I just dont feel like breaking a new gun in.

I really want a .25 wssm though

Hey STG,

I still use a .243 (T/C Pro Hunter). That's all we need in this state except for bear. I researched the .25 wssm and determined it was a lot of money for very little improvement over the .243.

My all time favorite is my Browning A-Bolt in .308. Killed a 300 pounder in Saskatchewan with it.

I also have a 7mm Rem Mag, 30-06, and a 300 Win Mag for big game but our little deer are no problem for the .243 and it don't wreck your shoulder on the range.

Good luck. I'm already looking forward to next season.

Yeah me too!

Like I said earlier....All my friends use 7mm and .300s. Sure they kill deer but they all have to aim at the shoulder and hope they hit where they aim. Then both shoulders and usually the neck are junk as far as food goes. I like my 1/4" entry and 3/8-1/2" exit hole from a clean kill to the head or upper neck. I looked at .308s also. I think my biggest problem is that I want a new gun and not that I really need it.

guns

I made a karmic vow never to shoot anything with more than 2 legs, so no deer rifles in my safe. I do have numerous weapons in regards to the human varmint:

Glock 36 (slim .45)
Glock 30 (.45)
Glock 27 (subcompact .40)
Ruger GP101 (.357)
Walther P38 (9mm)
S&W .38 airweight
H&K 12 ga. pump shotgun
and for deep cover,
.22lr NAA mini derringer
and soon,
S&W model 29 (.44--As in Dirty Harry)

You SC residents should get your concealed weapons permit, especially if you live within 20 miles of North Charleston, the nation's 7th most dangerous city.
Be safe...

Ed,
Ive got a glock 27 .40 also. I have been casually looking for a .22 auto for fun and maybe a .32 or .380 auto for the GF. The g27 .40 fits her hand perfectly (she can get all 4 fingers on the butt) but kicks too much and is quote "loud"

Know anyone teaching the concealed weapons course? I could probably get 6 or so people together

Kris,
A good buddy of mine just took the class on John's Island from a guy named Limehouse. It was one Saturday for 8 hours(as opposed to 2 or 4 evenings spread out). Apparently the guy does it in a shop w/o a big backstop, so he only allows .22 for the shooting part of the test. I took the CPW at Trader World on Cross Country Rd., but ATP in S'vile/Goose Creek is closer to you...

Let me know if you get a group..My GF needs to take the class, and I would rather her meet some new people who love guns as much as I do. By the way, I got her a .22 LR derringer for Christmas (see link). I know it's .22, but she won't carry anything better, so it's better than nothin.' Actually, a .22 wildcat in the head can be a real brain-rattler.

Hey Macy

I got 24 two-legged shooters in my safe right now. You got good taste in firearms.

I can fix you up with a mint S&W 629 if you want to drive to Pickens. I've had my CWP for a long time and absolutely LOVE guns.

Thats a pretty cool little gun Ed. Im sure I know 5 or 6 people who want to take the CWP but getting my slack **** friends together is a different story. Let me know if you ever just want to get together and shoot. Ive got plenty of land and nothing to shoot at this time of year.

King Ranch,

I might be heading up to Greenville to pick up some tires before the end of January...What's the finish and barrel length on that beast?

OK my gun cabinet includes

Remington SP10 10ga Auto - Love it but too heavy
Remington 11-87 Super mag 12ga 3.5" - HATE IT!
Remington 11-87 premier 12ga 3" - love it but it "blowed up on me"
Browning Silver hunter 12ga 3" - greatest shotgun ever made!
Benelli Nova 12ga 3.5" pump - I wont sell it because I dont want anyone else to hate something as bad as I hate this gun
Mossberg 3.5 Pump 22" barrel and reddot scope - Love it for turkey
Mossberg 3" pump - Decent for the price
Remington 870 20ga - My first gun
H and H 12ga single barrel - My Grand dads.
H and R .410 bored and rifled to use .44mags - cool!
Savage 110 .243 - Great gun
Glock 27 .40 - Love it
A matched set of Browning A-5 light 12s owned my by grand father and great grand father which were made in 1952. My GGF gun came with 2 barrells a 28" full and 26" improved and I had it completely restored mid summer last yr and havent fired it since. My GF gun is still in rough shape. They were both in a fire approx 12yrs ago.

Probably a few Im missing but thats the noteable ones
