IMO...what really needs to be done is check the fuel pressure...while idle and under load. That could lead you in a direction...for getting this corrected.
Did you use Motorcraft spark plugs when you did the maintenance?

I agreee with the o2 sensors and the fuel pressure directions. If your dealer doesn't know where to go if there are no codes, I'd find another dealer. The Ford Technical website has procedures for troubleshooting problems like this without codes! They don't want to bother with doing real mechanic work.
Check your intake system for leaks too. I wouldn't be suprised if you have a leak somwhere after your MAF sensor. It won't always throw a code, especially if it only leaks under heavy load.
Check out your intake hoses from the MAF to the intake first. I'll be you'll find a leak.

just wanted to know how to get rid of the P1000 code and what the rules are for passing smog if this code is present and will not go away. Krewat posted some interesting info. about the 8500lbs and over trucks having OBD-1 instead of OBD-II. I am taking my truck back to the smog tech tomorrow morning and basically told them I need to get it to pass smog. cuz my tags are almost 2 months overdue The measured levels are not even noticable, so I don't know how they can fail it for a none emmissions code. I think need to read the EPA/CARB rules alittle more about that code.

I have an 02 SD 4X4 V-10 that pings also and it only has 40K miles on it. I too replaced the fuel filter and had the Ford Dealership flush the fuel system miles ago. The manual says use regular/Low octane fuel but lately it's been pinging while climbing hills. It never used to. I use Chevron gas, maybe I should try another fuel?

My '01 pings too, with only 30,000 miles (36k now). Going from 87 to 89 octane did away with 90% of the pinging, but I just noticed with the last tank of 89 it is starting to ping more.
