Engine I.D.

I am not getting any help in the '61-'66 forum, so I'll try here. I have a '64 F100 with vin F10CK464596. According to the other posts, this is supposed to be a 292 truck built in Kansas City. The truck has a 6. How can I identify it? Red valve cover, Holley carb, exhaust and intake on driver side (in case they are different), and it has a generator. The only Ford straight 6 I have ever seen was a 300, and it isn't that. What should I look for to help I.D. it?
Thanks, Tim.

Engine I.D.

It sounds like you have a 223 cubic inch six.

I don't know if this would help but..
the 5th digit in a vin # prior to 1980 is the engine code.
8th on 1981+

Thanks, mantta! Do you have some basis for thinking it is a 223? Do you know if there are any #'s on the block or something else I could check to find out for sure? I can't imagine anyone taking out the 292 to install a 6, but I may leave it in if I can get it running well enough. It's kind of hard to buy parts when I don't know what I have. Do these share parts with any other Ford 6?

Engine I.D.

The 223 was the only six cylinder available at that time. It does not share anything with other sixes Ford makes or made. It had several different horsepower ratings from 1954 up because of combustion chamber volume differences but thats about all. If you need any details about this engine I have a Chiltons manual that goes back to 1954.

Thanks again, mantta, but this is not the original engine. The vin shows it to be a 292 V-8 truck, so the engine is not original. That is why I am trying to I.D. the engine by casting numbers or something like that. I have absolutely no idea what it is. I only know it isn't a 300. HELP, HELP!!!

Engine I.D.

You said the VIN indicates it is a 292, obviously from what you describe, it is a six. The description of the engine you give is that of a 223 cubic inch engine. I do not have any other information on casting numbers etc. That was the only six available at that time except for the 262 that was used in bigger trucks.
