Trouble getting started

My 1965 f100 is having new trouble now that the clutch and main seal are new. It was in a barn for 15 years and had really bad gas.

I cleaned out the tank and blew out the lines, there was some rust/gas pudding in the bottom of the tank it was amazing that it ran on that stuff. But anyway now that I have a clean tank, lines, new fuel pump and new gas it runs great. However, it sometimes does not want to start. The starter seems to cut out after a couple cranks, and makes a funny high pitched whining sound. A friend said it might be the solenoid is shot, or the starter is about to give up.

The real problem is that it does not seem to get gas. I just put a new fuel pump on so we are thinking about the carb or float. If I pull the choke out and get lucky it will start the first time but quit after it chugs a few times. If I catch it quick and put in the choke it may start. But after I miss it starting the fist time it will turn over and over but will not start for a while.

Should I clean out the carb, I dont know much about this either but I have figured out everthing else with your help.

What should I try?

If you look at the carb, is there a filter attached to the front of it where the fuel line goes in? Replace it with a new one. If not I would highly recommend picking a clear fuel filter to install inline between the pump and carb. Rebuilding the carb would be a very good idea. The amount of junk in the bottom of the fuel bowls may be restricting fuel flow. Not to mention sitting that long is not good for carbs. The gaskets and seals tend to dry rot and leak.

If the starter is cutting out and whining your bendix drive is going bad. These days a new drive cost almost as much as a rebuilt starter, that is the way I would go.

I have to agree with airharley, Fist off rebuild the carb. after fifteen years in a barn that would be highly recommended. Check and replace Hoses and Wiring all the way to the starter you never know if rodents or other critters chewed on them. Replace your belts and make sure you got good ground and give it another try. good luck
