I have traveled the 101 from LA to Monterey. There is only one large grade in that area, its the Cuesta grade between San Luis Obispo and Atascadero. Its not that bad. After that its smooth sailing north.

read the guy's later post - in which he clarified - he did SAY U.S. Highway 101, but what he MEANT, as he noted in his "correcting post" later, was that he was inquiring about Calif .State Sign Route 1.

MadMedic20;
Thanks! I do think we will come back the 101 or the 5 instead of the coast highway.

As a side note, make sure your brake controller is working good and the brakes on the trailer are in good repair. Happy motoring!

Hwy 1 is a nice drive. I bet it would nerve racking with a trailer though. I tried taking PCH (hwy 1) back from Monterey to San Luis Obispo one time. I got an hour down the raod and with no warning it was closed for a huge land slide.

Coming back I would take 101 not I-5. I worked on part of the I-5 where it comes through Kern County as a Paramedic, tons of traffic accidents. Its a long straight boring freeway that people seem to kill themselves on. Really boring drive on the I-5.

Thanks for the Information. This is exactly the kind of information I was hoping for. I'll take WestTnTrucker's advice and check the DOT webpage on a regular basis.

Michael,

Unless your hauling boulders in your trailer you won't have any problems on the Northbound 101, Southbound is even easier.
Yes, the San Luis Obispo hill Northbound is a bit of a grade but it isn't too long and then it's a joy ride from there.
I tow my Weekend Warrior toyhauler to Pismo pretty regularily and have an '01 Ex. V-10 with 3.73's, 3" lift, 33/12.5/17's and a Banks kit. Pulls like a mule, never a problem.
Make sure you air down the truck tires at Pismo before towing in the sand, best to stay in 4 low if your in the soft sand towing.
Have a great time- Enjoy!

Thanks for the reply! It looks like the trip should be no problem from what everyone says. The toybox will have no toys (or boulders)in it!

The wife wants a no dirt bike holiday for a change. I will get a chance to see Pismo though and will probably make a trip back up with the bikes.
